Fire Regulations
Open Flame
- The use of propane or propane and butane tanks is prohibited in the
Javits Center.
- If you plan to use an open flame in your booth, you will need to apply for a permit.
Click here to complete the request form. If you have any questions please call the
Fire Marshal at (718) 999-2405 or (718) 999-2403. They will explain to you what
steps you need to take in order to comply with the Javits and FDNY open
flame requirements.
- The Fire Marshal will be checking to make sure all exhibitors have the necessary
permit for an open flame. If you are using an open flame and do not have the permit
and approval from the Fire Marshall, your exhibit will be closed down until proper
arrangements are made.
- An exhibit that does obtain an Open Flame Permit must have a fire extinguisher
in the booth.
Flameproofing
- All display materials (not including product) used in the Javits Center must be flame
retardant and conform to New York City Fire Department regulations. No
combustible decorations shall be used at any time.
- All fabrics and decorations used in booths must be flameproofed with a compound
approved by the New York Board of Standards and Appeals. An affidavit must be
kept available in your booth for inspection by the FDNY, stating clearly:
* By whom and when such flameproofing was done
* The exact materials flameproofed and the flameproofing compound use
* The approximate period of effectiveness of such flameproofing.
Flameproofing usually lasts from six months to a year after which the
material
must be reprocessed
- Those wishing to have their materials flameproofed should find a number of firms in
their local Yellow Pages under “Flame proofing.” Among the most convenient for
New York are:
* Bay Ridge Flameproofing, 1720 67th St., Brooklyn, NY, (718) 236-2129
* New York Flameproofing Co., 135 East 144th Street, Bronx, NY,
(718) 665-9200
* Rose Brand Textile Fabrics, 75 Ninth Avenue, New York, NY, (212) 242-7554
