Just about every business starts small and just about every small business uses a combination of QuickBooks and Excel to run the company during the early years. Then what? For growing food manufacturing companies, there may never be a perfect time to change systems, but timing is important. Here are a few questions that may help you find out “what time it is” in your company: • Is your business truly generic? Or small enough to seem that way? • How fast are you growing? • What is holding you back from growing? • How much of your day-to-day business is managed in spreadsheets? • Have you ever followed the paper trail through your company? How many things are entered into computers and paper documents multiple times? • Does your company pass the vacation test? Can everyone on your staff and management team take a two-week vacation (or sick leave) any time of the year without serious side-effects on the company? • If you had the customer and the production capacity, could you take on a 30% increase in volume next month? Or even three months from now? • What is the essence of your business model; how do you make money? Are you using tools in your office operations that play to that directly or are you “going around the system”? • On what day of the month do you know for sure the financial results for the prior month? And is that result ever a surprise to you?About the NASFT
