Is It Ever Ok to Take a Swipe at Your Competitor in Advertisements?

We are all familiar with the coke wars. It is always Pepsi vs. Coke, and it will always be that way. It is ingrained into our culture, and each has their own cult following (we all know which one we belong to). Recently, Pepsi released their newest campaign, “Summer time is Pepsi time.” The first commercial shows Santa Claus taking a vacation at some hip resort dancing to Montell Jordan’s “This is how we do it.” Santa goes to the bar for a drink and when offered a Coke, Santa refuses. The bartender remarks, “I thought you had a deal with, you know,” and Santa replies, “I’m on vacation.” The commercial is hilarious, but is it the right move for Pepsi? Should brands attack their competitors in their ads?

My mom raised me to call them “roach coaches,” or the food trucks that served greasy, unidentifiable and questionable food that usually made me sick for the next 24 hours. So I was extremely surprised to see the sudden rise of food trucks all over the nation, including San Luis Obispo. What surprised me even more was that the reviews of these trucks compared them to four star restaurants—dubbing them “gourmet on the go.” Googling “food trucks” gives you 14,300,000 results. I can’t even count the number of sites that are dedicated to locating or tracking food trucks across the country. What’s Cooking With the Spice Hunter?

We were asked to create a showcase spot highlighting The Spice Hunter herbs and spices, and how they make a recipe come alive. When studying all of the herbs and spices, we really began to appreciate their vibrant colors and various textures. This gave us the idea of using the herbs and spices themselves to animate into a tasty dish. For this endeavor, we turned to Academy Award-winning animator, Joan Gratz. Joan embraced the idea in the storyboards and went to work pouring, shaping, moving and twisting herbs and spices to create a fully cooked turkey, a delicious carrot cake and traditional paella. Master frames were created with real spices, which were digitized and morphed into motion. “It was hard working with all the spices without eating all day long,” said Frank Scotti, creative director at Recipe. Dukes Mayonnaise commercial conitunes to be a hit

Nearly five years ago, Recipe created a TV commercial for Duke’s Mayonnaise and it continues to be a huge success. The spot received the highest marks in consumer testing and continues to raise awareness for the brand. What is the secret to its success? Tim White. He is the star of the commercial and is the main reason the spot continues to grow in popularity. Tim was chosen out of hundreds of real Dukes users who auditioned for the commercial. His “any other mayonnaise wouldn’t respect my potato salad” admission resonates with loyal Dukes users who swear by the brand. Plus, the ladies swooned over him! He owned a small catering business in Atlanta Georgia and was known for his famous potato salad, which can be found on Duke’s Mayonnaise website.
