The team at Nuovo Pasta knows the kids’ segment is a popular one. They realized that from market research and their own experience. “Many of us have younger children,” says Tom Quinn, vice president, operations. “We have first-hand knowledge of what our kids eat, and we tried to develop a product from a kid’s perspective.”
With that in mind, Nuovo set out to create a ravioli with the beloved flavor of mac-and-cheese because of its popularity with little ones. “Kids have a real impact in the purchase position. They like the gold fish shape and the cheesy flavor,” he says. “But parents have to like it too, so we made an all-natural product that is high in protein. We were striving to give something to everyone in this product.”
Quinn suggests retailers create signage that explains how to try the ravioli. (For example, “Great meal for kids and adults. Serve with your favorite sauce or butter.”) He also recommends sampling. “Any time you do a unique product, sampling never hurts,” he notes. “When my kids walk by a sampling table, I usually end up buying something for them.”
Pastas from Nuovo’s main product line include Roasted Sweet Potato Gnocchi, Quattro Formaggio Sachette and Provolone & Prosciutto Tortelloni. —D. Moss
