Summer Show Starts Sunday; Tour D.C.'s Little Ethiopia, Top Retailers; Exhibitors Give Back
The 57th Summer Fancy Food Show starts this Sunday, July 10, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The three-day trade event is the largest marketplace for specialty foods and beverages in North America. The Show attracts buyers from around the world looking for what’s next in great food to present to customers in the year to come. They’ll have plenty to choose from: The exhibit halls will be filled with 180,000 products from 2,400 exhibitors representing 80 countries and regions. Among them will be scores of summertime treats, including Bourbon Burnt Sugar Ice Cream from High Road Craft Ice Cream & Sorbet, Watermelon Essence Water from Hint, Inc. and Pistachio Almond Kulfi Bars from Kaurina’s. Register now for the pre-Show attendee discount of $35. The price goes up to $60 on Saturday, July 9.
EXHIBITOR NEWS...The Invisible Chef is introducing a new product line, Savor the Seasonings Dip Mixes, which are planned for launch in August. The collection features blends of herbs and spices and includes Bacon Cheddar, Cucumber Dill and Sun Dried Tomato. D.C. food. The Summer Show delves into Washington’s thriving food culture with two tours presented by Sharone Swedarksy of DC Metro Food Tours (pictured, right). Learn about the area’s vibrant Ethiopian restaurant scene on Saturday, July 9, from 12:30 - 5 p.m. The tour will chronicle the intricate flavors, textures and colors in Ethiopian cuisine, while recounting the history of the Ethiopian people. There will be stops at several of D.C.’s 45 Ethiopian restaurants. Learn more and register. EXHIBITOR NEWS...Wine Country Kitchens is launching a new category to add to its offerings: popcorn oils. The company infuses expeller pressed canola oil with flavors such as white truffle, roasted garlic and roasted jalapeno that transfer their flavor to popcorn. Read more. Booth 1813
EXHIBITOR NEWS...The Korean Pavilion is hosting an on-site pop-up restaurant, Hansik, at the Summer Show, offering a three-course, prix-fix menu prepared by Akira Back, executive chef at Bellagio's Yellowtail in Las Vegas. Back will incorporate select products from the Pavilion's 25 exhibitors in dishes such as Bibim Tuna with Strawberry, Rayu and Mini Corn, Kogi Taco with Serrano Perfume and Persimmon Delight with Mocha and Korean Tea Air. Giving back. Exhibitors at the Summer Show plan to donate more than 100,000 pounds of specialty foods and beverages--enough to fill eight tractor trailers--to area residents in need. The donation will be made at the end of the Show on Tuesday, July 12, to DC Central Kitchen (DCCK), a leading anti-hunger organization that prepares and delivers more than 6,000 meals a day to 100 partnership agencies. DCCK’s social enterprise, Fresh Start Catering, will cater a Fancy Food Show reception for the 2011 sofi Awards.
EXHIBITOR NEWS...Four new teas from Choice Organic Teas' line are now available in 845 Kroger supermarkets and other banner stores such as Dillons and Hilander.
