D.C. Metro Area in Fancy Food Spotlight at Show, in sofi Awards; Kosher Workshop; Gift Basket Tips
The 57th Summer Fancy Food Show is bringing a world of food to Washington, D.C. Amid 2,400 exhibitors from 80 countries and regions, the D.C. metro area will be grabbing plenty of attention at the Show, which runs Sunday, July 10 - Tuesday, July 12, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. More than 80 specialty food makers from Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland will present their cookies, spice mixes and artisanal cheeses and other innovative products. They include Divine Chocolate, Washington, D.C., Dr. Lucy’s Cookies, Norfolk, Va. and Mayorga Coffee, Rockville, Md. Register now for the pre-Show attendee discount of $35. D.C. region shines in sofi™ Awards. Regional specialty food companies made a strong showing in the 2011 sofi Awards for the outstanding specialty foods and beverages of the year. Among the 125 Silver Finalists from a record field of 2,326 contenders are Blue Crab Bay Co., Melfa, Va., Bone Doctor’s BBQ, Charlottesville, Va.; La Pasta, Inc., Silver Spring, Md., Route 11 Potato Chips, Mount Jackson, Va. and Todd’s Dirt Seasonings, Severna Park, Md. Buyers at the Summer Show are invited to vote for their favorites. Winners will be announced Monday, July 11, at a red-carpet ceremony hosted by celebrity chef Cat Cora. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Show, or online.
EXHIBITOR NEWS...Belgioioso is introducing Ricotta Salata to its line of cheeses. The semi-soft table cheese is aged for 60 days and is easy to slice, cube, crumble or shave. It is available in whole wheels, random weight retail wedges and new 5-ounce retail cups of pre-crumbled cheese. Amid strong consumer interest in kosher foods, the Summer Show presents a guided tasting of classic and contemporary kosher cuisine, Monday, July 11, 8 - 9 a.m., before the exhibit halls open. Presenter Joan Nathan, author of Quiches, Kugels and Couscous: My Search for Jewish Cooking in France and contributor to The New York Times and other publications, will talk about classic kosher cuisine in Europe and the U.S., and explain how the kosher tradition can be adapted for contemporary tastes and lifestyles.
