Since it was established in 2002, Sonoma, Calif.-based Sonoma Syrup Co.’s focus has been its infused simple syrups for the bar, barista and chef, says Founder Karin Campion. But when the company won its first sofi™ Silver Award in 2005 for its Vanilla Bean Infused Simple Syrup, Campion began to think about producing artisanal extracts. The sofi-winning vanilla syrup featured Campion’s own blend of Tahitian and Madagascar vanilla, so a line extension into extracts seemed like a natural one.

“I would take gallons of the blend home with me and pour it into cookies for my kids. Then I figured that if I love using it, others would love baking with the special blend,” says Campion. Her assumption was correct: The extract blend, which uses vine-ripened Madagascar Bourbon and Tahitian vanilla beans, has remained one of the company’s top-sellers since being introduced to the market in 2006. The Extract Gift Set, this year’s winner for Outstanding Food Gift, was released at the beginning of 2010 and features the original best seller along with popular Almond Extract and Lemon Extract. 

Campion says the set is a perfect gift for aspiring and professional chefs alike, because the extracts “satisfy the most discerning lovers of baking with their fragrance and intense flavor profiles, helping bakers achieve exceptional taste experiences.” The Almond Extract, for instance, is four percent stronger than most other almond extracts on the market, notes Campion, and produces a strong, creamy and nutty flavor.
