Source Atlantique: If You Care 100% Biomass FSC Certified Firelighters

For years Source Atlantique has been creating eco-friendly items for its If You Care line, such as non-bleached paper products and aluminum foil made from 100 percent recycled aluminum. “Eventually, we realized there were many other environmental and social issues that needed to be addressed with premium products,” says Joel Schuman, president.

One such product was eco-friendly Firelighters that could be used as an alternative to kerosene (which is made from fossil fuels, is toxic and potentially dangerous to use). Source Atlantique created non-toxic wood chips that can be safely stored near or with food. “It’s the first product we launched that features FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood. We know the wood comes from sustainably managed forests,” Schuman explains. “Three or four will start a fire. They burn for eight to ten minutes, are very effective and carbon neutral.”

Schuman suggests specialty stores sell the Firelighters near a selection of different flavored or smoked woods to be used on grills in the summer, as well as near marinades or the meat or fish section to promote that the product is safe to have near food. In the fall or winter, he recommends putting the Firelighters near firewood or fireplace tools. Other products in the eco-friendly line include household gloves (made from FSC-certified ethically sourced latex), all-natural waxed paper (made out of 100% soybean wax), cheesecloth (made with unbleached cotton) and paper sandwich bags (that are chlorine-free). —D.
