The
marketplace is home to 30 individual specialty food,
wine and home
retailers. Here you will find everything
needed from the butcher, baker,
seafood monger and
cheesemaker, plus the wine to go with it all.
Some of the tenants include:
BOCCALONE SALUMERIA
Opened
in June 2008, the newest Ferry Building addition is a hip take on a
classic Italian salumeria. The shop offers cured meats galore, from
salamis (orange and wild fennel is a favorite) and soppressatas to
prosciutto, pancetta and lardo (cured back fat spiced with rosemary and
juniper). You’ll also find cooked delicacies such as mortadella,
ciccioli and porchetta di testa and fresh sausages. Everything is made
by hand in small batches from humanely and sustainably raised
heritage-breed pigs.
CIAO BELLA GELATO
There’s
nothing like a classic Italian gelato—this time made with
organic farmer’s market fruits. Melon gelato, Summer Peach and the like
are a seasonal specialty at Ciao Bella. It’s almost impossible to walk
by without a glimpse into the Italian crafted cases to view and taste
the huge selection of housemade gelatos, especially the delectable
Valrhona Chocolate.
COWGIRL CREAMERY
Cheese
and everything related is celebrated at this shop. On Saturdays,
customers stand five-deep, tasting and buying Neal’s Yard Dairy and Jean
d’Alos cheeses, plus butters, milks and creams from favored
cheesemakers and dairies. Other products include June Taylor jams and
jellies, McQuade’s Celtic chutneys, salted caramels from France and
more.
DELICA RF1
This retailer brings
high-end Japanese take-away meals to the American
public. Inspired by Chez Panisse Chef Alice Water’s “delicious
revolution,” the store carries seasonal contemporary meals from around
the world, using farm-fresh, mostly organic and locally sourced
ingredients. This is quick food made with the “Slow Food” concept in
mind: fresh cold vegetable and fruit emulsions eaten much like soups;
freshly made salads; and a frying bar that cooks hot croquettes.
MASTRELLI’S
A
slice of Italy resides here, with the scent of salami, marinated
vegetables and olives in the air—making ordering a huge housemade
sandwich a must. Fresh ravioli, imported goods such as dried porcini
mushrooms and staples for the Italian cook round out the offerings.
MCEVOY
RANCH
This California olive oil maker has brought the best
of the ranch
lifestyle into a retail format. The focus is, of course, McEvoy Ranch’s
Tuscan-style olive oils. Organic produce grown on the ranch is sold on
weekends.
SCHARFFEN BERGER CHOCOLATE MAKER
Look for the familiar packaging and the unmistakable smell
of chocolate,
and you have found Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker. The presentation
is hip and friendly—beginning with the packaged gifts in front with blue
paper, vintage posters of chocolates past, and tasty housemade
brownies. The full line of Scharffen Berger chocolates, cocoa powder,
sauces and nibs can be found.
