Opening Spring 2011

Former Quince and Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay Pastry Chef William Werner is scheduled to open Tell Tale Preserve Company, a pâtisserie, delicatessen and café, on Maiden Lane in Union Square in January. The shop will feature his modern take on pastries, confections, preserves, sandwiches, salads and desserts, as well as chocolate and coffee drinks.

The ever-changing pâtisserie case features cakes served whole as well as in petit four–style cubes in multiples of four in flavors like Roasted White Chocolate with Coffee and Black Sesame and Sun Crest Peach with Caramel and Bourbon. Other offerings include small square tarts called tiles, tea cakes served by the slice or as a loaf, and assorted cookies and confections. Preserves come in re-usable Weck jars, and include jams (Apricot-Praline, Golden Raspberry-Mexican Vanilla); marmalades (Seville Orange, Lisbon Lemon with Citron and Honey); sweet spreads (Milk Jam and Hazelnuts with Honey) and savory items (Liberty duck rillettes, pickled vegetables or terrine of foie gras with Palmira chocolate and Port). Savory menu choices include sandwiches layered with the preserves, as well as seasonal soups and salads. No patience? Werner’s confections can also be found at the Tuesday Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market.

Tell Tale will also launch a monthly subscription program called Tell Tale Society. Each month participants will receive fresh pastries, preserves, confections and savory breads packaged in a rustic burlap bag with an intricate letterpress logo card. —Laiko Bahrs
