In 2016, U.S. consumers proved that meal kits are hot. According to a recent Harris Poll, one in four adults purchased a meal kit in 2016, with 70 percent of those purchasers still actively buying meal kits.

The top reasons for buying meal kits include saving time on meal planning, and the short prep and cook time. Among those who no longer purchase meal kits, nearly half say a lower cost would influence them to purchase again, while one-third said they would be influenced if the meal kits were available in their local grocery stores.

Saving time on grocery shopping, and trying new or healthy recipes rounded out the top five reasons for meal kit purchasing. The survey also found that meal kit purchasers agree that these dinners are healthier than prepared foods from their local grocery stores. Notably, 66 percent said they eat seafood more often when purchasing these kits.

Meal kits also rate highly in satisfaction, however, dessert options appear to be lacking, with 86 percent saying they would add dessert to their meal kit if available. News Release
