Pieology Pizzeria acquired rival chain Project Pie for an undisclosed sum. Based in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Pieology has more than 100 locations in the U.S. and one in Guam. Carlsbad, Calif.-based Project Pie has about 30 restaurants in the U.S and abroad.

According to Pieology CEO Carl Chang, the acquisition is the first of what could be many for the fast-casual chain, which allows customers to fully customize personal pizzas and salads. He adds that the fast-casual pizza market is saturated and there are opportunities for operators to acquire smaller chains. Project Pie locations in the U.S. are expected to be rebranded as Pieology, while some overseas locations may keep their names.

Pieology is on track to have more than 200 locations open by the end of 2016. The chain got a boost when the founders of Panda Express took a minority stake in the company earlier in 2016, reports Los Angeles Times. Full Story
