Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Fresco y Más, Harveys Supermarket, and Winn-Dixie, has committed to protecting the health of pollinators and ensuring food security for future generations.
The company will work with suppliers that avoid the use of pesticides that can be detrimental to these insects and animals, source fresh produce and flowers from suppliers with integrated pest management practices verified by a third party, encourage suppliers to obtain pollinator-friendly certifications, and work to increase USDA Organic produce offerings.
“At Southeastern Grocers, we are committed to the development of lasting change, especially when it comes to safeguarding the world’s food supply for our future generations,” said Steve Williams, VP of produce and floral for Southeastern Grocers, in a statement. “As a grocer, feeding people is our first priority, and protecting the health of pollinators like honeybees is paramount to ensure we are able to help nourish our communities for years to come.”
Pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds are required for most flowering plants and crops. According to the USDA, around 35 percent of the world’s food-related crops rely on animal pollination for plant reproduction. Southeastern Grocers hopes to protect these crops by speaking with suppliers to establish clear plans to improve pollinator environments.
