Southeastern Grocers Combats Child Hunger

Specialty Food Association

Southeastern Grocers has announced the “Break from Hunger” program along with the SEG Gives Foundation. The strategy will provide accessible, healthy meal options to ensure no child goes hungry, according to the retailer.

Customers and associates 17 and younger can purchase the “Student Summer Lunch Pack” available through Labor Day at the deli department for two dollars. The low-cost lunch option includes either a ham or turkey sandwich, chips, fresh fruit, and a bottle of water. For each meal purchase, the grocer will donate one dollar to Feeding America with the goal to donate the equivalent of one million meals.

“The challenges that our communities have faced during these past few years have magnified the struggle of many families to feed their children during the summer months,” said Raymond Rhee, chief people officer for Southeastern Grocers, in a statement. “Through our ‘Break from Hunger’ program and continued partnership with Feeding America, we aim to provide children with the nutritious food they need for a healthy life. We want to do everything we can to get food on the tables of our neighbors who need a helping hand–now more than ever.”

States served by Southeastern Grocers’ locations rank among the top 20 for child poverty rates in the country. They include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. To give back to these communities, the grocer recently donated $140,000 to seven Feeding America food banks to help fund other hunger-relief initiatives.
