Wegmans Discontinues Private-Label Soda Over Ingredient Concerns

Wegmans is discontinuing its private-label soda, known as “WPOP,” because of concerns over artificial ingredients, reports local news source ABC 13 WHAM.

In a sign posted in Rochester, New York, the retailer explained that the sodas contain aspartame and high fructose corn syrup, and don’t meet their “Food You Feel Good About” requirements.

They also released the following statement: “As mentioned on the sign, we are discontinuing our Wegmans Brand Soda. Our Food You Feel Good About banner stands for no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.”

The news comes one month after the World Health Organization deemed aspartame a possible carcinogen. This verdict, however, was met with controversy as the FDA rebutted the designation, citing its evidence of safety.

Dr. Steve Cook with the University of Rochester Medical Center told the news source that adverse health outcomes from aspartame and high fructose corn syrup can come in many forms, including gut health, gastric distress, and migraines. Full Story
