Toronto, ON – This year, Mary Macleod’s Shortbread proudly celebrates 45 years of baking the same rich, all-butter shortbread that first captured hearts in 1981. What began as one woman’s passion for perfecting a classic Scottish family recipe has grown into an internationally recognized Canadian brand — without ever changing the cookie at its core.
For 45 years, our shortbread has remained true to the way Mary made it: simple ingredients, baked with care, handcrafted to create a perfect buttery bite. While our business has grown and evolved, our recipes have stayed the same. As we mark this milestone, we fondly remember our founder, Mary Macleod, who passed away in 2016, and whose spirit continues to guide every batch we bake.
“Carrying on Mary’s legacy is both an honour and a responsibility we feel every single day,” says Sharon Macleod, Chief Cookie Officer. “Mary believed that if you were going to indulge, it had to be exceptional — and that standard still guides us. Forty-five years later, we are still baking her shortbread the same way, with the same care and the same commitment to quality. We think of her often, and we are proud to continue building on the foundation she created.”
From our early days of red boxes to today’s signature blue packaging adorned with elegant gold foil, our look has evolved to reflect the premium quality inside. The cookie remains unchanged — but the presentation has grown alongside us, becoming refined, elevated, and gift-worthy while staying unmistakably Mary Macleod’s.
Over the decades, our flavour collection has expanded and refined. At one time, our ovens produced more than 15 varieties, including Cranberry Almond, Chocolate Orange, Whole Wheat Walnut, Coconut, and Butterscotch, to name a few. Today, we proudly focus on six signature flavours — including two gluten-free options — while staying true to the classic varieties that built our reputation.
Our growth has extended far beyond Toronto. Mary Macleod’s Shortbread is now exported internationally, with distribution across the United States, the UAE, and Panama, bringing a taste of Canadian-crafted shortbread to homes around the world.
Along the way, we have achieved significant milestones that reflect both our values and our standards. We are proud to hold WBE (Women Business Enterprise) certification, CAMSC (Canadian Aboriginal and Minority Supplier Council) certification, and BRCGS certification — reinforcing our commitment to quality, inclusion, and global food safety excellence.
Recognition from our community has also been deeply meaningful. We were honoured to win the Toronto Star’s Cookie Bracket and to be voted Toronto’s Holiday Cookie of the Year — a testament to the loyal customers who have supported us for generations.
And truly, without our customers, none of this would have been possible. For 45 years, people have welcomed our shortbread into their homes and businesses, shared it around holiday tables, gifted it to loved ones, and made it part of their traditions. Your loyalty, encouragement, and belief in our brand have allowed us to grow while staying true to who we are.
As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we do so with immense gratitude — and with the same commitment to excellence that Mary instilled from the very beginning. Our motto says it best: “So Worth It.”
For 45 years — and counting — it has been.
