The feature touches on everything we’re proud of: our deep selection of handpicked imports, the seasonal shipments we personally source from small producers in France and beyond, and the people behind the counter—always ready with a recommendation, a recipe idea, or just a good food story.
“Our team is full of complete food nerds who love to talk about food all day long,” said co-owner Katy Strouk.
That passion for food—and for creating a place where discovery is part of every visit—has always been at the heart of Monsieur Marcel.
Katy, a California native, met Stephane Strouk, a Frenchman, while backpacking through Europe. The two fell in love, got married, and spent a few years living in Paris before eventually settling in Los Angeles in the early ’90s. When Stéphane realized he couldn’t find his favorite French snacks—or a piece of cheese that wasn’t bright orange and perfectly square—he and Katy started on the journey to opening a tiny cheese counter called Monsieur Marcel Cheeseshop (named after Stephane’s father, who, ironically, didn’t even like cheese).
Three decades later, that little counter has grown into something much bigger: a French-inspired gourmet market, a seafood stall, a classic bistro, a coastal oyster bar and seafood grill, and now Maison by Monsieur Marcel—a home store filled with thoughtful tableware, culinary gifts, and pieces meant to bring joy to everyday living.
The entire team at Monsieur Marcel is honored by this recognition from SF Gate, and grateful to all the customers and community who’ve helped keep the spirit of good food, curiosity, and a little French magic alive in Los Angeles.
