Inc. 5000-recognized spice company invests directly in the farming communities it sources from through its Madagascar office
SARASOTA, FL — March 2026 — Slofoodgroup, a Specialty Food Association member and GMP-certified spice manufacturer based in Sarasota, Florida, has completed construction of two water wells serving vanilla-farming communities in Madagascar. The wells, located in Masindrano and Ambonibonara, were built through Slofoodgroup Madagascar, the company’s direct office established in 2024, and represent a direct investment in the infrastructure of the communities that produce the vanilla beans Slofoodgroup brings to market.
The first well in Masindrano was completed in mid-2025, with the second in Ambonibonara following in early 2026. Both projects were initiated and managed by Slofoodgroup’s Madagascar team, which works directly with local farmers on vanilla sourcing, quality standards, and community development. The wells provide access to clean water for daily use in communities where vanilla cultivation is a primary livelihood.
Madagascar produces the majority of the world’s natural vanilla, yet many of the rural communities responsible for growing and curing vanilla beans lack basic infrastructure, including reliable access to clean water. Slofoodgroup’s direct presence in Madagascar — rather than sourcing through intermediaries — gives the company firsthand visibility into these challenges and the ability to act on them.
“We are not a company that sources vanilla from a distance,” said Shawn Gavin, CEO and Founder of Slofoodgroup. “We have our own team in Madagascar. We see the conditions these farming families live and work in every day. Building these wells was not a marketing decision — it was the right thing to do for the communities that make our business possible.”
Slofoodgroup operates a GMP-certified processing facility in Sarasota, where imported vanilla beans and spices are sorted, graded, and packed. The company sources directly from small farms across more than a dozen countries and holds EarthKosher certification across its product line. In 2023, Slofoodgroup was recognized on the Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies and as an Inc. Regional honoree.
The water well projects are part of Slofoodgroup’s broader commitment to ethical sourcing and direct trade. By maintaining its own office in Madagascar, the company ensures traceability from farm to finished product while investing in the long-term viability of the farming communities it depends on.
