The World's Best Cheese Celebrates 25 Years of AOP Protection

Gruyère Brings Icon-Status Cheese to Summer Fancy Food Show

NEW YORK (June 16, 2026) — Yes, it has been around for nearly a century, but 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of Le Gruyère AOP's protected status as a Swiss icon.

The AOP, which stands for Appellation d'Origine Protégée or Protected Designation of Origin in English, denotes the place-based identity of food products in Switzerland and throughout the European Union.

Champagne? It must be from the Champagne region in France, just as Gruyère must be from the Gruyère region of Switzerland; otherwise it's "Alpine-" or "Gruyère-style," according to the AOP label.

To celebrate, a campaign from the Interprofession du Gruyère kicks off in June — just in time for the Summer Fancy Food Show.

The world's best cheese will be on-site at the show's Deli Pavilion, Javits Center level 3, booth 747.

"Le Gruyère AOP is more than a name, it's a way of living," Denis Kaser, head of international marketing for Le Gruyère AOP consortium, said. "We take our responsibility of bringing approachable, accessible, delicious cheese to food-lovers around the world seriously and are grateful to those who support us."

From cow to cracker, Le Gruyère AOP is a heritage food steeped with tradition yet versatile enough for any palate or cuisine:

  • Grilled watermelon benefits from its natural saltiness
  • Lamb bao oozes with cheesy sauce, the classic Swiss soufflé hits all the right notes
  • Chef Lionel Rigolet's mac and cheese somehow makes a perfect food even better
