Grocers Among Fortune's Best Companies to Work For

Specialty Food Association

Wegmans Food Markets has ranked number four on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list, the only grocer that made the top 10. Wegmans has placed on the list every year since its inception 24 years ago.

The list is based on the survey responses of more than half a million employees, rating their workplace on elements including trust, caring, and fairness in times of crises, as well as employees’ physical, emotional, and financial health and the company’s broader community impact.

“This honor celebrates each and every one of our employees and their dedication to always help others,” said president and CEO Colleen Wegman, in a statement. “It has been truly inspiring to witness our people rise above every challenge during the past year to become a closer and stronger family company together. We are extremely grateful for the trusted relationships that exist between our people and our customers that continue to earn us a place on this very special list.”

Target, Nugget Market, and Publix Super Markets took the number 14, 24, and 42 spots, respectively.

This year was Nugget Market’s 16th year in a row on the list, recognized for its dynamic culture and work-life balance.

“Trust is everything,” said Eric Stille, president and CEO of Nugget Markets, in a statement. “Though 2020 has been a very trying year in so many ways, we at Nugget Markets continue to rally through it together, finding—and often fighting for—the silver lining through every new challenge. When times are at their toughest, it provides us with an even greater opportunity to make a positive impact, and we are humbled to be a leader not just in our industry, but in our communities and for our associates, as well.”

For the third consecutive year, Publix made Fortune’s list of Best Big Companies to Work For.

“For over 90 years, we’ve remained focused on serving our customers and communities and taking care of each other,” Publix CEO Todd Jones said in a statement. “Over the past year, our country has faced many challenges and much uncertainty, making the role of the supermarket more essential than ever. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our associates, we’re pleased to receive this prestigious recognition.”
