Toblerone Updates Packaging to Comply With Swiss Rules

Toblerone's makers are taking the Matterhorn mountain and Swiss flag off of packaging for chocolates whose production has moved to Slovakia, reports AP News.

Mondelez International, which owns the brand, said on Monday that it is updating its packaging to conform with rules in Switzerland about how products qualify for the “Swissness” title.

The law on “Swissness” was adopted in 2017 to protect Swiss manufacturing claims. For a product to be permitted to make Swiss-related claims, like “Swiss-made,” two criteria have to be met: 80 percent of the raw materials need to come from the country, and the processing that gives a product “essential characteristics” needs to be carried out in the country.

“The redesign of the packaging introduces a modernized and streamlined mountain logo that is consistent with the geometric and triangular aesthetic,” Mondelez spokeswoman Livia Kolmitz told the news source in an email.

The changes to the packaging only apply to the 1.2- and 1.8-ounce bars that will be made in Slovakia. The larger format will still be produced in Switzerland, according to the company. Full Story
