Grubhub Reveals Ordering Trends

Specialty Food Association

Grubhub has analyzed millions of orders on the platform over the past year to determine food ordering trends. In addition to releasing a report based on the trends, the company sent personal ordering highlights to app users.

Burritos were the most ordered item on the platform, jumping from the eighth most ordered in 2021. Over four million orders including burritos were filled throughout the year. They were followed in popularity by cheeseburgers, cheese pizzas, pad Thai, chicken quesadillas, California rolls, fried chicken sandwiches, Caesar salads, chicken tikka masala, and boneless wings.

The report also broke down order popularity by time of day:

• Top Breakfast Orders: sausage, egg, and cheese sandwiches, donuts, sausage burritos, bagels with cream cheese, muffins

• Top Lunch Orders: burritos, cheeseburgers, fried chicken sandwiches, cheese pizzas, chicken quesadillas

• Top Late-Night Orders (10 p.m. and later): chicken quesadillas, fried chicken sandwiches, cheeseburgers, mozzarella sticks, cheese pizzas

Tiramisu and baklava topped the dessert order charts with 44,000 and 35,000 purchases, respectively.

Trending cuisines this year included Australian cuisine, which saw 531 percent year-over-year growth, followed by South African food which experienced  294 percent growth, Cambodian cuisine up 4 percent.

When ordering coffee, two insights were found, Americans preferred iced coffee to hot, and oat milk was preferred four times more than almond milk as a milk alternative in the beverage.

On the alcoholic beverage side, 2022 saw increased popularity for beer, overtaking last year’s interest in red wine for the top slot. Margaritas, hot sake, piña coladas, and white wine rounded out the top five list for this category.
