Portland-based Singaporean Sambal Startup Wins Two GFA Awards Recognized for Excellence in Taste, Authenticity & Social Responsibility

Portland, OR (February 1, 2022) - In their first year entering the Good Food Foundation’s annual awards competition that celebrates excellence in craft food and drinks, Sibeiho® wins not one – but two – Good Food Awards for their pantry staple AF Chili Chunka Sambal Sauce and OMG! Sambal® Kachang in the snack category.

2022 Good Food Award Winners:

- AF Chili Chunka Sambal (Pantry Category) - Sibeiho’s super tangy vegan Sambal. Named after Auntie F who always let Sibeiho® co-founder Holly Ong raid her fridge for homemade Sambals to go with her feasts. Use this Sambal to add a tangy, garlicky hit to any dish. Great with braised or roasted meats, as a dip for anything fried, or as a dressing on cold tofu salad, raw oysters, and more. All-natural, no MSG, spice level 2/5

- OMG! Sambal® Kachang (Snack Category) - A spicy, savory, slightly sweet Singaporean  snack mix made with a blend of crunchy cereals, roasted peanuts and curry leaves, flavored with herbs and spices including OMG! Sambal®. Based on a recipe by Auntie J’s Chinese New Year treat, Kachang hits all the flavor and texture notes making for a uniquely irresistible snack.

Other Signature Sibeiho Products:

- Boomz Sambal - Sibeiho’s everyday go-to Sambal. Savory and full-bodied, caramelized sweetness with a touch of heat. Add to any dish for spicy, umami deliciousness. All-natural, no MSG, spice level 2/5.

- OMG! Sambal® - Sibeiho’s cook-with-anything vegan Sambal adds a Singaporean zing to any dish. Use this Sambal to add instant depth and heat to whatever you’re cooking. A must-have, versatile kitchen hack. All-natural, no MSG, spice level 4/5.

To mark the announcement of this year’s GFA Winners, both Alice Waters and René Redzepi, legendary chef of restaurant Noma, sent congratulatory videos. Speaking to the sustainability and social responsibility practices of the Winners, Redzepi noted: “I believe it is our collective efforts that can turn the tide and ensure our shared earth can survive. You are champions of the future, and you are leading the way.”

Sibeiho® is co-founded by Holly Ong and Pat Lau who first introduced Singagporean multi-cultural cuisine (with Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Nonya culinary influences) to Portland when they began hosting farm-to-table private supper clubs in 2019. “Our passion to share the foods of our homeland, the foods we missed while living and working in the U.S., is really what inspired us to create Sibeiho. Working with local farmers and sourcing sustainably just makes the whole process even more rewarding,” says Holly Ong.

Made in small batches using all-natural, local whenever possible, ingredients. Their versatile, umami-rich Sambals inspired the opening of their retail store in Portland, Oregon and online shop in November of 2020.

Look for Sibeiho® at the Specialty Food Association Winter 2022 Fancy Food Show in Las Vegas (February) and at the Good Food Awards Mercantile in San Francisco (March). Find Sibeiho® Sambals in select specialty stores and at the Sibeiho retail shop at 740 NW 23rd Avenue in Portland, Oregon.
