Walmart Expands Drone Delivery Program

Specialty Food Association

Walmart and DroneUp, the drone-delivery company, have expanded their partnership to bring drone delivery services to more supermarkets. Soon the platform will be available in 34 Walmart locations with a potential to reach 4 million U.S. households.

Customers in Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Utah, and Virginia will be able to order a variety of goods from Walmart via drone, like Tylenol, diapers, and more. The machines have a weight limit of 10 pounds and will operate within an 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. window. The delivery fee for use of this feature is $3.99.

According to a Walmart statement, although the company expected the drones to be used to transport emergency items, customers have been using the service most for convenience purposes, like a quick meal. The top-selling item delivered via air transit at an existing location is Hamburger Helper.

Data gathered from the expansion of the program will serve the entire drone industry by helping to further refine drone operations and travel.
