Walmart to Innovate Delivery Process

As part of an effort to create a more seamless omnichannel experience, Walmart will add parcel stations to its ecosystem of 4,000 stores operating as delivery hubs and network of fulfillment and sortation centers, said Jennifer McKeehan, Walmart's SVP of transportation and delivery, in a blog post.

“Parcel stations help us move goods even faster to a customer’s home by using our private fleet to transport more online orders,” noted McKeehan.

The stations will be added to the company’s delivery hubs. Packages will travel from fulfillment centers and then go either to sortation centers or directly to stores before being delivered. Once at a store hub, the parcel station will help improve the last-mile delivery experience.

“A parcel station [is] like a mini post office that receives and delivers packages,” she added.

This addition will increase the number of Next Day Delivery options customers can opt for while increasing the efficiency of distributing online orders from stores, according to McKeehan.

The retail giant plans to have over 40 parcel stations operational within stores by the end of the year, with many already in operation during the holiday season. Full Story
